Bloomsburg Baseball Routs St. Augustine; Falls to Lander

GREENWOOD, SC--Kevin Ward (Upper Darby/ Monsignor Bonner) went 2 for 3 with 2 home runs and five RBI and Syril Kress (Littlestown/ Littlestown) was 4 for 4 with two doubles, two runs, and two RBI to lead Bloomsburg to a 16-4 victory over St. Augustine in the first game of a doubleheader in Greenwood, South Carolina. The Huskies dropped the second game of the day, 12-1, to Lander University.

In the first game, the Huskies scored early and often in an easy victory over St. Augustine. Ward hit a two out, two-run home run over the left field fence in the first inning to give Bloomsburg an early 2-0 advantage. After adding another run in the second, Rob Watlock (Plains/ Coughlin) added a two-run home run to right-center field in the third to make the score 5-0 after three innings of play.

With the score 6-0 going into the bottom of the fourth, St. Augustine rallied to scored three runs to cut the lead in half. However, the Huskies responded in the top of the fifth with three runs of there own, capped off by an RBI double by Andy Bucher (Littlestown/Littlestown) that made the score 9-3.

In the top of the 7th, with one run already in Ward hit his second two-run home run of the game to make the score 12-3 and put the game out of reach.

Along with Kress and Ward, Matt Robinson (York/ Red Lion) also had a big day offensively, going 4-5 with a triple, three runs and two RBI. Dustin Johnson (Sunbury/Shikellemy) (1-1) pitched a complete game, scattering 12 hits, allowing three earned runs and striking out five to earn the win.

In game two, Lander scored runs in each of the first five innings to jump out to an 8-0 lead. The Huskies struggled to get any offense going against Lander pitcher Chris Munn who allowed just four hits and no earned runs in 6 2/3 innings. Bloomsburg was able to get on the board in the top of the seventh when Nick Lerch (Selinsgrove/ Selinsgrove) scored on error to make the score 8-1. However, Lander responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning, capped off by a two-run home run by the Bearcats Justin King to make the final score 12-1.

Lander improves their record to 15-6, while Bloomsburg falls to 2-5. The Huskies will play another double header Sunday afternoon. The Huskies will take on Lincoln Memorial University at 11 a.m. and will go against Lander once again at 2:30 p.m.
